First unit reaches Practical Completion at SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway
195,547 sq ft unit occupied by Kuehne + Nagel to be operational in April 2019, local public transport scheduled to begin early April and park Manager appointed
The first unit at SEGRO’s flagship logistics park in the East Midlands has reached practical completion and will be operational from April 2019.
Kuehne & Nagel, the global transport and logistics company, will be taking control of the new 195,547 sq ft facility and will be the first customer to operate from SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway.
Construction of the building began in July 2018 and the first employees will be in situ by early April having relocated from premises in Nottingham and Birmingham.
The facility sits on a 17-acre site and will be the new national operating centre for the Over-land activities in the UK. In addition, the warehouse includes a 40,000 sq ft temperature controlled area for pharmaceutical products, offices and staff amenities. In total 300 employees will be based at the facility, which has been rated as ‘Very Good’ by the environmental rating BREEAM and provides electric vehicle charging points.
A new park manager has also been appointed to oversee the day to day running of the park, acting as the first point of contact for customers and leading the management of on-site security and other contractors. The park manager will also work closely with public transport providers which will be running from early April.
Andrew Pilsworth, Business Unit Director for National Logistics at SEGRO, said:
“The completion of the first unit at SLPEMG is a significant milestone and marks the park being officially open for business. In less than 9 months we’ve delivered a great facility to one of our group-wide customers and we’re delighted to have them on site. Progress continues apace across the park and we’re also delighted to welcome our new park manager.”
Jim Hedderwick, Director of Overland at Kuehne + Nagel UK, said:
“The facility at SLPEMG will be integral to our UK operations and we are looking forward to going live in April. We are delighted that SEGRO has been able to complete ahead of schedule to allow us to relocate staff and operations prior to the Easter holiday.”
SLPEMG is multi-modal logistics hub which will provide a total of 6 million sq ft of modern industrial space across 700-acres. 2.5 million sq ft has already been contracted.
Located adjacent to East Midlands Airport, the site offers direct access to the M1 and the UK road network and will include a 50-acre rail freight interchange which Maritime Transport will operate, beginning in Autumn 2019.
The rail freight interchange forms part of a £100million infrastructure programme which includes Kegworth Bypass, a new route connecting the site to the M1 via a bridge over the motorway, a public bus terminal and extensive highway improvement works.
SLPEMG is located in the near centre of England, with Nottingham 13 miles to the north-east, Leicester 20 miles to the south and Derby 14 miles to the north-west, meaning a potential workforce of one million people is within a 30-minute drive.
As well as providing critical infrastructure for the logistics supply chain the development will create 7,250 jobs, 900 construction jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs.
