For all the attention on automation, the central question for food logistics has not changed: how do you create a warehouse where people can do their best work? Robotics, AI and goods-to-person systems are reshaping operations, but they are not eliminating the need for human talent. If anything, they are raising the standard for the kind of workplace employers need to provide.

That matters because labour remains a live challenge across warehousing. Recent UK Warehousing Association research points to a persistent skills gap, with only 13% of employers reporting no difficulty recruiting staff and more than half expecting shortages in automation and robotics capabilities within five years. Warehousing employs more than 650,000 people in the UK, so the issue is not whether people still matter to logistics. It is how to attract, protect and retain them in a more advanced operating environment.

This is why the warehouse of the future cannot be defined by machinery alone. It has to be designed as a high-quality place to work. That starts with location. Access to labour, transport links and the day-to-day practicality of getting to work all influence whether a site can attract and keep the right team. In a competitive labour market, convenience is not a side issue. It is part of the offer.

Safety is equally fundamental. The Health and Safety Executive identifies manual handling as a major cause of injury in warehousing and logistics, and that remains highly relevant in food environments where pace, temperature and physical demands can intensify the challenge. Automation can make a significant difference here. When repetitive walking, lifting and transport tasks are reduced, the workplace becomes safer, more consistent and less physically draining. That is not only good operationally; it is good for people.

But automation works best when it is part of a broader workplace strategy. The buildings themselves still do a great deal of the heavy lifting. Layout, lighting, air quality, circulation, welfare provision and breakout space all shape the everyday experience of work. A well-designed warehouse reduces friction, supports concentration and makes the role more sustainable over time. A poorly designed one does the opposite, no matter how advanced the equipment inside it may be.

This is where the conversation needs to move on. The real opportunity is not to ask whether automation will replace warehouse jobs. It is to ask how automation, design and workplace quality can combine to create better jobs and more resilient operations. As routine tasks are reduced, the value of training, upskilling and role quality becomes more important. The best warehouses will not just process goods efficiently. They will help employers build stronger teams, with work that feels safer, smarter and more rewarding.

In that sense, warehouse development now has a wider responsibility. Creating brilliant logistics space is no longer only about throughput, specification or technology. It is also about talent. The most successful operators will be those that understand a simple truth: if you want great performance from a modern warehouse, you have to make it a place where great people want to work.
