"In 2011, we will continue our efforts to drive forward the sustainability agenda, working with people across our business and beyond to cut energy and water costs for our occupiers, and make a positive local contribution where we have a presence. We recognise that we have more to do, and are stepping up our efforts to deliver more sustainable buildings and manage our properties more efficiently, without significant additional costs."
David Sleath, SEGRO Chief Executive

Drivers for Sustainability

We have always taken our responsibilities to the environment and society seriously.

This is now being driven further by growing demand from stakeholders and regulation, as well as by opportunities to manage risk and cut costs.

Our sustainability approach is driven by a range of factors:

  • Meeting regulatory requirements – ensuring everything we do is in compliance with legislation as a first step. Our approach, however, goes further to look at how we can balance our environmental, social and economic issues to maximise returns.
  • Staying close to our customers – an active and well-communicated sustainability strategy can help us to meet the needs and expectations of our customers.
  • Managing risk and preserving our strong balance sheet – having sustainable buildings can help us reduce the risk of obsolescence within our portfolio.
  • Managing our costs and those of our customers – ensuring we use the resources we consume, in the most efficient way, can help us to manage costs.
  • Attracting and retaining talent – our sustainability credentials help us attract and retain the talent we need for our business.

Sustainability measures feature increasingly in legislation on a local, regional, UK, European and global level. In the UK, Government policy is driving towards zero-carbon for all new commercial buildings from 2019, with Building Regulations setting increasingly stringent energy-efficient design standards. The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is also assigning a cost to carbon.
